Interesting Facts About The Hotel
"Green" standards were used in the construction of the Beaufort Hotel. The floors and fireplace in the lobby, bar, and restaurant are a mix of antique bricks, reclaimed factory maple flooring, and unique heart-pine–all local to the area. The floors were built from reclaimed wood from the Hart Cotton Mill in Tarboro, North Carolina (shown below).
The use of local reclaimed materials was a way to infuse history and authenticity into the property and provide a connection from the past to the present that is appreciated by older and younger generations alike.
Every day is Earth Day at the Beaufort Hotel as we continue to integrate green practices into our daily routines. We are proud to be designated ‘Carteret County’s First Full-Service Green Hotel’ by the NC GreenTravel business.
The property on which the Beaufort Hotel now stands played an important role in the history of Beaufort’s fishing industry. It is located on the former site of the last operating menhaden processing plant in North Carolina.
Menhaden processing started in North Carolina shortly after the Civil War, though it wasn’t until the 1890s that menhaden factories began netting some real success.
Built at the turn of the 20th century, the Beaufort plant was bought by Wheatly’s grandfather, C.R. Wheatly, and William Potter in 1934. Jule Wheatly joined the operations in 1973. The menhaden industry flourished on the North Carolina coast for more than a century.
Menhaden was the fish that built Beaufort. It was a bony smelly fish used for fertilizer, animal feed, and bait. Natives in town could often smell the fish being processed. Many, probably most, didn’t like the smell. But many others called it the “smell of money.”. That smell — was part of Beaufort’s culture and identity.
It all changed in 2005 when Beaufort Fisheries, the last menhaden processing plant in the county and state, shut down for good, taking with it jobs, income, and millions of pounds of fish landings.
The net reel is a lasting icon of Beaufort’s menhaden industry. It was used for drying purse seines, a large net deployed around an entire school of fish.
Today, the net reel serves as a tribute to the generations of hardworking Menhaden fishermen.
There are over 2-miles of nautical rope in the dining room. These act as acoustical panels in the ceiling of the restaurant.
